Genelecin 7360A SAM™ -subwoofer yhdistää Laminar Spiral Enclosure (LSE™) -koteloteknologian AutoCal™-kalibrointitoiminnallisuuden ja Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM™) -ohjausohjelmiston kanssa. Aktiivisessa jakosuotimessa käsitellään linjatasoista signaalia.
Aktiiviset jakosuotimet jakavat audiosignaalin taajuuskaistoihin, jotka ohjataan erillisiin tehovahvistimiin. Vahvistimet on kytketty kyseiselle taajuuskaistalle optimoituihin kaiutinelementteihin.
Aktiivikaiuttimissa käytetään sekä digitaalisia että analogisia jakosuotimia. Genelecin digitaalisissa aktiivijakosuotimissa on myös muita signaalinkäsittelytoiminnallisuuksia, kuten elementtien suojaus, lentoaikakompensointi ja taajuuskorjaus.
Genelecin analogisissa aktiivijakosuotimissa perustuu elektronisiin komponentteihin, jotka käsittelevät matalatasoista signaalia ennen tehovahvistusta. Aktiiviset jakosuotimet eroavat toimintaperiaatteeltaan passiivisista jakosuotimista, joissa käsitellään voimakkaita signaaleja, suurta virtaa ja toisinaan myös suurta jännitettä.
Tyypillisessä kaksitiekaiuttimessa tulosignaali jakosuodatetaan kahdelle erilliselle tehovahvistimelle, joista toinen ohjaa bassoelementtiä ja toinen diskanttielementtiä.
Aktiivisella jakosuodinteknologialla on useita etuja:
- Elementin sähködynaamiset muutokset eivät vaikuta taajuusvasteeseen.
- Signaalia voidaan säätää joustavasti käytettävän elementin ominaisuuksien mukaisesti.
- Jokaisen elementin tulosignaali prosessoidaan ja vahvistetaan yksilöllisesti. Yksittäisten elementtien signaalit eivät häiritse toisiaan, mikä vähentää keskeismodulaatiosäröä ja yliohjausongelmia.
- Elementtien välisiä herkkyyseroja voidaan kompensoida.
- Elementin ominaisuuksiin liittyviä taajuus- ja vaihevasteen poikkeamia voidaan kompensoida halutulla päästökaistalla.
- Aktiivinen jakosuodin mahdollistaa lisäksi taajuusvasteen säätämisen sekä kaiuttimen optimoinnin kaiutinjärjestelmään ja erilaisiin kuunteluympäristöihin ilman ulkoisia taajuuskorjaimia. Tuloksena on yksinkertainen, luotettava, tehokas, tarkka ja johdonmukaisesti käyttäytyvä aktiivikaiutinjärjestelmä.
Monikanavainen bassonhallintajärjestelmä suodattaa matalat taajuudet subwooferin toistettavaksi.
Bassonhallinnan periaate on, että pääkanavien ja Low Frequency Effect (LFE) -kanavan bassosisältö ohjataan ja toistetaan vain niitä käsittelemään kykenevistä kaiuttimista eli joko pääjärjestelmäkaiuttimista tai yhdestä tai useammasta alabassokaiuttimesta.
Stereoäänentoistossa tulee toistaa signaalit 20 hertsistä 20 kilohertsiin. Suuret monitietarkkailukaiutinjärjestelmät toistavat tällaiset laajat taajuuskaistat tasaisesti. Monikanavaisten äänentoistojärjestelmien, ammattimaisten äänentoistojärjestelmien ja kotiäänentoistojärjestelmissä on pystyttävä toistamaan jokaisen kanavan taajuudet 20 hertsistä 20 kilohertsiin. Se vaatii pääkaiuttimien, alabassokaiuttimien ja jakosuodinelektroniikan yhteistoimintaa.
Bassonhallintajärjestelmä käyttää joko analogisia elektroniikkapiirejä tai ohjelmistopohjaista suodatusta, joka suodattaa matalien taajuuksien informaation pääkanavilta ja ohjaa sen yhteen tai useampaan alabassokaiuttimeen.
LFE-kanavaa voidaan monitoroida myös alabassokaiuttimen kautta ja lisätä muiden pääkanavien mataliin taajuuksiin. Siksi bassonhallinnan tärkein tavoite on taata kaikkien kanavien koko taajuuskaistan tarkka monitorointi.
- Alabassokaiutin laajentaa järjestelmän taajuusvasteen kuultavien taajuuksien alarajalle.
- Kun tarkkailukaiutin ei toista matalia taajuuksia, se voi tuottaa suuremman enimmäisäänitason.
- Optimoitu matalien taajuuksien toisto saavutetaan soveltuvalla alabassokaiuttimen sijainnilla, jolloin tarkkailukaiuttimet voidaan sijoittaa vapaammin.
- Alabassokaiuttimen toiston taso ja vaihe sovitetaan tarkkailukaiuttimiin, jolloin saavutetaan tasainen ja tarkka äänentoisto alas 19 hertsiin asti ja jakosuodinpisteen läpi.
- LFE-kanavan ulostulotaso (0 tai +10 dB pääkanavilla) voidaan valita lähdetyypin mukaisesti tarkan äänentoiston tuottamiseksi.
- Kun alabassokaiutin voidaan ohittaa, pystytään määrittämään alabassokaiuttimen kuultava teho.
Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS™) -valmiustilatoiminto vähentää virrankulutusta.
Genelec kehitti vuonna 2013 Intelligent Signal-Sensing -piirin, joka täyttää sekä ErP-direktiivin vaatimukset että Genelecin omat direktiiviä tiukemmat vastuullisuusvaatimukset.
ISS™-piiri seuraa kaiuttimien signaalinsyöttöä ja havaitsee, milloin signaali on käytössä. Jos ISS-piiri ei havaitse audiosignaalia hetkeen, se asettaa kaiuttimen valmiustilaan, jossa kaiuttimen virrankulutus on alle 0,5 wattia. Kun syöttösignaali havaitaan, kaiutin kytkeytyy päälle itsestään. Kaiutinjärjestelmä alkaa siis säästää sähköä heti, kun työskentely katkeaa.
Jokaisen kaiuttimen taustalevyssä on huonevasteen säätimien vieressä ISS Disable -kytkin. Kun päävirtakytkin on asennossa ON, ISS™-toiminto on oletusarvoisesti päällä.
Jos ISS-toimintoa ei haluta käyttää, se voidaan poistaa käytöstä kääntämällä ISS Disable -kytkin asentoon ON. Tällöin kaiuttimen virransyöttöä ohjataan päävirtakytkimestä.
Päävirtakytkin katkaisee kaiuttimen virransyötön kokonaan.

Viime vuosikymmenen aikana subwoofereihin kohdistuneet akustiset vaatimukset ovat konkreettisesti kasvaneet sellaisiksi, etteivät perinteiset suunnitteluperiaatteet enää riitä. Alan markkinajohtajien velvollisuus on tehdä rohkeita kokeiluja parhaan mahdollisen suorituskyvyn saavuttamiseksi.Genelecin insinöörit hyväksyivät heille asetetun haasteen useiden vuosien kokemuksella akustiikan tutkimuksesta ja tietotaidosta. LSE™ Laminar Spiral Enclosuren kaareva muoto on tulosta heidän työstään.
Spiraalimaisella rakenteella voidaan bassorefleksikaiuttimessa kriittinen putki integroida muuhun kotelorakenteeseen tavalla, joka perinteisssä suorakaiteenmuotoisessa kotelossa olisi mahdotonta. LSE™ -rakenteella voidaan tilavuudeltaan suhteellisen pieneenkin koteloon rakentaa pitkä ja pinta-alaltaan suuri ja samalla kertaa muuttuvaprofiilinen refleksiputki, jonka virtausominaisuudet säilyvät lineaarisina hyvinkin suurilla äänenpaineilla ja matalilla taajuuksilla. Myös putken päät voidaan muotoilla virtausteknisesti edullisesti, ja virtausääniä vähentää edelleen se rakenteesta johtuva etu, ettei putken kotelon seinänä jatkuva sivu käytännössä pääty lainkaan.
Elementtikohtaisesti optimoidut tehovahvistimet.
Elektroniset jakosuotimet jakavat audiosignaalin taajuuskaistan osiin, jotka voidaan ohjata erillisiin vahvistimiin. Vahvistimet on liitetty kyseiselle taajuuskaistalle optimoituihin muuntimiin.
Tyypillisessä kaksitiekaiuttimessa aktiivinen jakosuodin tarvitsee kaksi vahvistinta: yhden bassoelementille ja toisen diskanttielementille. Vahvistimet liitetään suoraan aktiivikaiuttimien elementteihin, jolloin vahvistimien kuormitus on tunnettu ja yksinkertaisempi. Jokaisella elementtikohtaisella vahvistimella on vain rajallinen taajuusalue, jota se vahvistaa (vahvistin sijoitetaan aktiivisen jakosuotimen taakse), mikä yksinkertaistaa rakennetta.
Aktiivisella rakenteella on useita etuja:
- Vahvistimet liitetään suoraan kaiutinelementteihin, mikä tehostaa vahvistimien elementin äänikäämin vaimennuksen hallintaa ja vähentää dynaamisten muutosten esiintymistä elementin sähköominaisuuksissa. Se saattaa parantaa järjestelmän siirtymävastetta.
- Vahvistimen lähtövaatimukset ovat pienemmät. Kun energiaa ei mene hukkaan passiivisen jakosuotimen komponenteissa, vahvistimen tehovaatimukset ovat huomattavasti pienemmät (jopa puolta pienemmät joissakin tapauksissa) ilman, että kaiuttimen akustinen teho heikkenee. Tämä saattaa pienentää kustannuksia ja parantaa äänenlaatua ja järjestelmän luotettavuutta.
- Kun vahvistimen ja elementin välissä ei tapahdu hävikkiä, saavutetaan äärimmäinen akustinen tehokkuus.
- Aktiivinen teknologia pystyy tuottamaan ylivoimaisen äänentoiston suhteessa kokoon ja matalaan alarajataajuuteen.
- Kaikki kaiuttimet toimitetaan tehtaalla sovitettuina järjestelminä (vahvistimet, jakosuotimet ja kotelo-elementtijärjestelmät).
Yliohjauksen suojapiiri takaa turvallisen käytön ja elementtien pitkäikäisyyden.
Kriittisissä audiotuotantoympäristöissä on ratkaisevaa, että monitorointijärjestelmä on luotettava ja aina käytettävissä. Yksi tärkeimmistä syistä Genelecin menestykseen lähetystarkkaamokäytössä on tuotteidemme luotettavuus. Luotettavuuden takeena on sisäinen suojapiiri, joka on ollut kaikissa tuotteissa vuodesta 1978 lähtien.
Suojapiiri ehkäisee elementtien vikatiloja havaitsemalla signaalitasoja. Mikäli signaalissa esiintyy yhtäkkisiä piikkejä tai jatkuvia liian korkeita tasoja, suojapiiri laskee signaalin tasoa automaattisesti. Suojapiirin toiminta ei luonnollisestikaan vaikuta äänenlaatuun millään tavalla työskenneltäessä kaiuttimen määritellyissä käyttöolosuhteissa. Se vain ehkäisee signaaleja rikkomasta kaiutinta.
Suojapiirin ominaisuudet ja edut:
- Laskee signaalin tasoa tarvittaessa (esimerkiksi kun elementin äänikäämin lämpötila saavuttaa turvarajan), mikä parantaa kaiuttimen luotettavuutta merkittävästi.
- Jokaisen kaiuttimen ja alabassokaiuttimen sopiva suojapiirirakenne sallii järjestelmän äänitason maksimoimisen.
Smart Active Monitor (SAM™) älykkäät kaiutinjärjestelmät sisältävät automaattisen kalibroinnin akustiseen ympäristöön.
Kuluneen vuosikymmenen aikana sisällöntuotannon tarve on kasvanut ennätyslukemiin maailmanlaajuisesti. Huolellinen elektroakustinen suunnittelu toimii perustana kaikille 1200, 8200, 8300, 7200 ja 7300 –sarjojen älykkäille tarkkailukaiutintuotteille. SAM™ järjestelmän poikkeuksellisiin ominaisuuksiin kuuluu muun muassa kalibrointitoiminnallisuus Autocal™, joka mittaa ja sovittaa tarkkailukaiuttimet automaattisesti akustiseen ympäristöön kompensoiden tasoerot, viive-erot, taajuusvasteiden poikkeamat sekä subwoofereiden vaiheet.
SAM™ järjestelmiä ohjataan Genelecin Loudspeaker Manager (GLM™) ohjausverkkoa ja -sovellusta käyttäen, joka mahdollistaa äärimmäisen joustavan ja luotettavan monitorointijärjestelmän luomisen. GLM 3 on intuitiivinen tarkkailukaiuttimien hallintasovellus, joka mahdollistaa jopa 45 SAM™ -tuoteperheen tarkkailukaiuttimen ja subwooferin kytkemisen järjestelmään. Genelec and Sound Blanc join forces for unique surround sound performance
As part of the Modern Sky record company – one of the most important independent labels in China – the sub-label Sound Blanc has been one of the driving forces behind the popularity and development of ambient music in China, and so Genelec was extremely excited to partner recently with the Sound Blanc team to stage a special performance of “The Cycle” Ambient Surround Project at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing.
Located behind the understated industrial façade of a warehouse in Burleigh Heads, on Queensland’s famous Gold Coast, is a new jewel in the immersive audio crown – Hype Republic. This high-end addition to Australia’s post-production industry is bedecked with stained wood, vintage leather, black steel and up-to-the-minute technology. The new post facility was built to empower filmmakers to create the highest quality work. Helping it achieve this aim is a Genelec 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos monitoring system complemented by Genelec GLM Loudspeaker Manager software.
“Hype Republic contacted us asking for an immersive solution for their new post-production studio,” recalls Paul Newcomb, business development manager at Studio Connections, Genelec’s Australian distribution partner. “They required an audio solution that would complement their film/video cinematography department and was capable of delivering 7.1.4 immersive playback. This studio would be open to many creative specialists and as such, the gear needed to be robust and reliable. The solution was a Genelec 7.1.4 Smart Active Monitoring system consisting of 8340s, 8330s and a 7360 subwoofer.
GLM was the key to bringing this system together. It just works flawlessly and even faster now with GLM 4.1.
“The reason for going with the Genelec Smart Active Monitoring range is that each monitor and subwoofer could be independently calibrated relative to its position in the room,” continues Newcomb. “Installing monitors in the ceiling can present many acoustic obstacles. Not only do they need to be frequency neutral, but their phase needs to be aligned with all the other monitors in the array. GLM calibration software is an invaluable tool in this situation, and Genelec’s unrivalled range of mounting options makes it so easy to install an immersive system in any room.”

The benefit that Hype Republic has seen from using Genelec monitors and GLM in its immersive setup is that each of the 11 monitors and the subwoofer is precisely calibrated for their specific position in the room. GLM sends a full frequency audio sweep through each monitor and subwoofer, and analyses the acoustics of the room via the GLM reference microphone and network adaptor. With the response of the room’s acoustics recorded, GLM software aligns the frequency response, playback level, distance delay and subwoofer phase of the entire monitoring setup.

Offering three concentrations – Recording and Production, Marketing and Promotion, and Manufacturing and Merchandising – the program has its hub in the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio on campus. That facility, which is housed in the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music, has just opened its newest room, a Dolby Atmos® mix classroom, which is fitted with a 7.1.4 monitoring array of Genelec RAW 8320 and 8330 speakers plus a 7360 subwoofer. Genelec RAW models, designed specifically with sustainability in mind, provide a stylish matte “industrial aluminum” aesthetic that particularly suits this facility. The monitors were purchased through Guitar Center Professional in Greensboro, NC, and the array was installed by a team of over a dozen seniors in the Music Industry Studies program, who also built much of the rest of the Atmos room, under the supervision of Scott Wynne, the Director for the Gilley Recording Studio and Professor for the Music Industry Studies program.
“In 2003, they finished construction on an actual recording facility, which meant that they wouldn’t have students running a 16-channel snake across the hallway and tracking on semi-pro gear, and that’s when the Robert F. Gilley recording studios started,” says Wynne, who arrived in 2006 after teaching at Florida Atlantic University. “Now, we have four different control rooms and several million dollars of gear, because I want the students to actually learn on the equipment that plug-ins are designed from.” That desire for authenticity led to the choice of Genelec speakers for the Atmos monitoring array. After the university’s facilities team strengthened the room’s ceiling infrastructure to better support the new speakers, the Atmos array was installed by the students, with seven 8330s comprising the horizontal array – three as the L-C-R on stands and four others wall mounted as left-right front surrounds and left-right rear surrounds – and four 8320s installed in the ceiling using Genelec 442BS brackets. The 7360 subwoofer is freestanding on the floor. “We used a laser protractor and determined the exact positions with the students, and they literally screwed the brackets into those joists, trying to make sure that they got as much experience out of this as possible,” Wynne explains.
The choice of Genelec speakers for such a pivotal space as the Atmos studio had to do with Genelec’s reputation as an incredibly accurate monitoring solution, the choice of professional production studios worldwide, as well as the proprietary self-calibrating GLM software for the Genelec Smart Active Monitors™. Wynne says GLM allows the production program to move the monitors around the room as needed for various types of productions, without ever losing ideal speaker placement for imaging and phasing. In the process, he adds, the GLM software became part of the teaching process. “It becomes a lesson about acoustics,” he says. “What I love about them is their ability to show you the frequency response in the GLM software, in order to notice where the frequency dips are, where you’re getting too much push. You can then physically show that to your students and say, all right, what do you think these problems are culminating from? And they can make suggestions: what if we moved the speakers back? What if we moved them a little bit closer? What could we do in the room acoustically to fix some of these anomalies that we’re seeing? There are a lot of great software programs that are out there that can show you this, but because GLM’s functionality is so seamlessly integrated with the speakers, we can make a change in the classroom and in less than a minute they can immediately see that response change.” But just as important as Genelec’s feature set and sonic quality is its support of education. “They’ve always been great at creating an educational experience for students, and for having their tech come out and do lectures and share knowledge with classes,” he says.
Finally, there’s the RAW look. “That's exactly the finish I wanted,” says Wynne. “That was the look that I felt like the facility needed to set it apart. I think they complement the space and the students all love it. Everything about them allowed us to feel like we have a very unique room here.”
So says Philip Eriksson, Hazelight’s Lead Sound Designer, and we couldn’t wait to visit Philip and Senior Sound Designer Anne-Sophie Mongeau in Stockholm to film them talking about It Takes Two, Hazelight’s brand new co-op 3D action adventure game ….and their love of Genelec monitors, of course!
Having started his career as a sound engineer, Philip studied film sound before joining EA Dice and working on their Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield titles. Two years ago he transitioned to Hazelight to take responsibility for the audio production on It Takes Two.
Originally hailing from Montreal, Anne-Sophie’s experience in the game audio industry is complemented by a Master’s degree in Sound Design from the University of Edinburgh, and her role in It Takes Two has been dedicated to creating and delivering high quality soundscapes and interactive audio.
In our exclusive video, Philip and Anne-Sophie discuss the process of sound design in game audio – revealing how recording underwater with hydrophones, home-made kazoos and the use of slime and compressed air all played a part in their latest project!
With sound being so important in the creation of atmosphere and realism in games, it’s no surprise that Philip and Anne-Sophie rely on Genelec monitoring in their daily work. Philip’s room is equipped with a 5.1 Smart Active Monitoring system comprising 8331s in the LCR positions, 8330s as surrounds and an ‘awesome’ 7360 subwoofer handling the LF duties.
“I need speakers just to be able to sit and make sounds for eight hours a day,” says Philip. “I also need to have that representation of the sound so that I know that it's clear enough, so that I have the depth and I have the width. And then this usually translates pretty well to headphones.”
Anne-Sophie agrees, and adds that “You want something that translates as clearly as possible what's coming out of the game like what you put in, in terms of assets and implemented work, and how that translates to the end user - so you want the best reference you can get.”
The gaming company, best known for selling over 2 million copies of ‘Human: Fall Flat in China’ within a week of launch, has opted for Genelec Smart Active Monitors in each of these spaces to deliver a pristine audio experience that helps the developers understand the environment that they are creating.
We found that not only does its smart calibration system provide an enormous advantage, the Genelec brand also has a fantastic reputation in the industry.
“In the early stages of the project planning, we decided to go with the Dolby Atmos monitoring system, so that both production and post production could be carried out,” stated Fang Wan, Audio Director of XD Inc. "After conducting extensive research on similar products, we opted for the Genelec system. We found that not only does its smart calibration system provide an enormous advantage, the Genelec brand also has a fantastic reputation in the industry.”
While Suzhou Pineapple Acoustic Engineering Co., Ltd, designed the acoustics for the Dolby Atmos mixing room and editing suites, the system integration and installation was handled by MusicKing (Shanghai) Cultural Development Co., Ltd. All three editing suites are equipped with 8330 nearfield monitors. For the immersive room, the designers chose the three-way coaxial 8351s for the LCR positions, and 8330s for the surround and overhead channels - with a 7360 subwoofer delivering the lower frequencies.
The entire system has been finely calibrated to produce the most accurate sounds for us to be able to create with confidence.
The new audio production spaces have already proven to be advantageous to XD Inc., providing the 20-person team with the space and technology to research and create the right audio for the games they are working on. The facility has received unanimous praise from the entire audio team, with the monitors proving particularly popular.
“The soundfield is immersive and the positioning is accurate,” reflected Fang Wan on the mixing space. “In addition, it has great resolution and sufficient detail. The entire system has been finely calibrated to produce the most accurate sounds for us to be able to create with confidence.”
The Rival hotel in the chic and bustling Södermalm district of Stockholm is renowned as one of the city’s favourite meeting spots. A building with lots of history, it has remained dedicated to entertainment and hospitality since its beginnings in 1937. In 2002, the complex was purchased by Benny Andersson (yes, that Benny Andersson from the legendary ‘70s supergroup, ABBA) along with two associates, and extensive redevelopment work began to shape the complex into what it is today – a luxury 99-room boutique hotel complete with bars, a bistro and café, modern meeting facilities and a theatre. The latest addition is a brand new bar named after Benny’s faithful Jack Russell terrier; Watson’s Bar offers food and drinks in a vibrant atmosphere with great music at the heart of the experience. A Genelec 4000 Series sound system ensures that the pulse never stops.
Open seven days a week from 11am – 1am except Sundays which has a Monday-morning-conscious closing time of 11pm, Watson’s Bar has rapidly become a favourite haunt for a relaxed lunch, a sneaky afternoon cocktail and of course afterwork DJ sessions. The combination of comfortable, attractive seating areas, cocktails, oysters and champagne, generous opening hours and excellent music has proved extremely popular with hotel guests and Stockholm residents alike. Rival turned to Adolfsson & Partners – a Stockholm-based firm who specialise in delivering turnkey building and interiors solutions – to conceive, design and deliver the new space. AV integration specialists, Hages, were engaged to design and install a fully integrated sound system capable of delivering a high quality, relaxed music experience during the day as well as high energy DJ sessions for the evening crowd.

Genelec loudspeakers had already provided many years of reliable service in the upstairs area of the hotel, so Hages had no hesitation in recommending a system for the new Watson’s Bar based on Genelec 4000 Series installation loudspeakers. “Our challenge was to accomplish a nice, full-bodied sound that would cover the whole of the new Watson’s Bar, from the leafy outdoor terrace through to the bar inside plus the reception and lobby,” says Hages’ Thomas Axelsson. “We decided on a combination of Genelec 4040 and 4030 loudspeakers supplemented by a 7360 subwoofer for low end reinforcement. We had less than three weeks to turn the project around and quite a few space restrictions to adhere to, but I’m delighted with the results, as is the client.”
"Genelec is an ideal choice for this type of installation where sound quality, tonal balance and high reliability are paramount," continues Axelsson. "Those were the client's criteria, and Genelec ticks all of those boxes. It's difficult to beat Genelec sound quality and reliability. Plus there was already an existing Genelec system in the bar upstairs that the client was very happy with, so it made Genelec a very easy choice.
"From our point of view we also wanted the solution to be easy to install, and Genelec 4000 Series loudspeakers are active, which means no external amplifiers to worry about. This is an important point when you're tight on space - and they also look great in the areas where they are visible. This is always a priority when architects are involved – they don’t like to see big ugly speakers cluttering up their design!”
However, for the Watson's Bar installation, the majority of the loudspeakers are completely hidden; five 4030s are concealed behind grilles over wall-hanging shelves down the sides of the bar, and the 7360 sub is neatly hidden in a specially built compartment under a sofa. Four powerful white 4040s grace the upper bar. Zone configuration and DSP is handled by a Bose ControlSpace ESP-880A processor connected to a programmable CC64 interface panel for straightforward, fingertip control of all zones and sources. A DJ output as well as a central music solution is housed in a technical cabinet behind the bar.

Welcome to Watson’s Bar!”
Since their beginnings in 2009, the company has opened seven more restaurants and a cocktail bar in the Finnish capital of Helsinki and employs around 200 people. Farang, their flagship venue, has recently relocated to stunning new premises spread over two floors offering both public and private dining facilities plus a large bar. A key part of the overall experience is the soundscape, delivered by a comprehensive 4000 Series Genelec sound system, designed and installed by renowned Finnish AV integration specialists, 4Business Oy.
“The brief from Matti was very clear,” explains 4Business’s Janne Lankinen: “With the new premises, Farang is set to make even more of an impact on the Helsinki restaurant scene, so sound quality - along with everything else - had to be absolutely top notch. Genelec was an obvious choice for us as it matched all of the quality and reliability criteria – and Matti was already familiar with the brand as he’d used Genelec almost exclusively for his other restaurant projects.
“The layout and the surfaces of Farang were a bit of a challenge from an audio perspective,” Lankinen describes. “The feel is quite industrial with lots of exposed concrete and metalwork. There are no convenient - and sound-absorbing - false ceilings or wall panels to hide behind, so we had to make sure that all cabling, mountings and installation were done properly as everything was visible. It also meant we had to be very careful with our system design in order to minimise unwanted reflections and reverberations. The restaurant is situated in a building which also houses newly renovated offices, so we also had to ensure that there was no sound conduction through the structure to the other premises in the building, especially for the low frequencies. Finally, the restaurant is spread over two floors with a very large opening between them; not only did we need to design a system that would cover the whole area evenly with no dead spots or hotspots, but we were inevitably confronted with problems of sound leakage between the two floors.”
Lankinen and his team conducted exhaustive simulations to determine coverage before specifying a system comprising a total of 54 active Genelec loudspeakers and subwoofers. “We decided on the analogue 4000 Series loudspeakers - with Symetrix Prism DSP processors equipped with Dante I/O expanders for matrixing, EQ and delay - as it was a useful approach to optimise the overall cost,” notes Lankinen. “Our aim was to ensure that when you move around the space, the audio experience remains similar throughout, and that the sound pressure would not drop at any point in a way that you’d feel that the music was disappearing.
“We used a mixture of 4020s, 4030s and the powerful 4040s depending on required throw and maximum SPL. Every single speaker was meticulously aligned and DSP was adjusted individually for the best possible results. That, together with acoustic treatment to minimise leakage between floors has enabled us to achieve a system that works beautifully at low sound pressure levels throughout the restaurant, and still has enough power in reserve to be turned up when required for a real party atmosphere.”
For the 7300 Series smart active subwoofers that are mounted in the ceiling, 4Business designed a custom mounting solution that is mechanically isolated from the structure. This ensures that any vibrations are conducted into Sylomer absorbers rather than the hollow core slab which might cause unwanted disturbance elsewhere in the building. When it came to calibrating the subwoofers, 4Business used Genelec’s GLM software with AutoCal to speed up the final adjustment process and ensure that every element of the system was sounding its best.
Responsibility and sustainability are key principles for Farang, and Genelec supports and communicates these values.
“I’m delighted with the results,” reports Lankinen. “The audio system supports the Farang brand as a top-class, place-to-be venue in Helsinki. The atmosphere in the restaurant is social and relaxed thanks to carefully thought-out playlists and high quality sound support.”

Matti Wikberg echoes Lankinen’s sentiments entirely. “All my goals have been achieved, and frankly, exceeded,” he admits. “Janne and his team identified the challenges from the outset and solved them beautifully. We have crystal clear audio throughout that sounds amazing, yet doesn’t get in the way of conversation, whether you’re two or ten people at the table. The right atmosphere enhances the experience immeasurably, and that’s what we’ve achieved here.”
The multi-room project - which includes both immersive and 5.1 surround studios as well as a host of video edit suites - was handled by SES-Audio, and all 15 rooms feature Genelec Smart Active Monitoring.
Studio 1 - which has been awarded Dolby Atmos HE certification – features a 7.1.4 system based entirely on the 8341 coaxial monitors from The Ones series. Eleven 8341s handle the LCR, surround and height positions, complemented by a 7380 subwoofer.
Studio 2 is also a 7.1.4 immersive room, again with 8341s in all positions supported by two 7360 subwoofers, and has complete compatibility with Studio 1 for maximum flexibility in optimising workflows.
Studio 3 is a 5.1 space powered by five 8320 nearfield two-way monitors and a 7350 subwoofer, while a separate Quality Control room has been equipped with eleven 8330 two-way nearfield models and a 7360 subwoofer. This room is designed to guarantee sound quality throughout the post-production chain, to meet the highest standards required by cinema and OTT platforms, and is capable of playing back content in all formats.
Finally, there are a total of 11 video editing rooms, each one equipped with 8330 monitors.

The company recently carried out an extensive renovation of their client areas and staff workspaces, with the goal of taking the iconic 130-year old law firm to the next level. Castrén & Snellman turned to renowned Finnish AV integrator, 4Business Oy, who specialise in delivering tailored AV and automation systems. The solution integrated a large number of Genelec loudspeakers for flawless audio quality throughout the building.

4Business installed a wide variety of Genelec speakers throughout the space depending on function, ranging from a pair of powerful 8351 Smart Active loudspeakers supplemented by two 7360 subwoofers in the 100-capacity event space, to the very compact 4010 and 4020 installation speakers for the wide variety of conference and board rooms.
Castrén & Snellman’s ICT Specialist, Mikko Kurhela, who worked closely with 4Business and Genelec throughout the project, describes the new system in their 100-person event space: “The solution we chose for music, speech and multimedia consists of two carefully tuned 8351 Smart Active loudspeakers, with two 7360 Smart Active subwoofers and an automatic mixer, all integrated into an easy-to-use AV system. The space is rectangular with the direction of presentation from the long wall into the room, so we needed wide angle speakers to ensure that speech is reproduced throughout the space with clarity and intelligibility. We also wanted high quality sound at low frequencies for music and multimedia, which we got by adding the two 7360 subwoofers. The speakers and subwoofers were tuned for the room using Genelec’s GLM calibration software.”
The Paja gym uses four ceiling-mounted 4020 speakers linked to a Sonos Port player for wireless music playback, while the music and speech sound system in the Tori café - which has a company library attached directly to the space - uses four 8430 IP loudspeakers. “Castrén & Snellman uses this multipurpose facility both as separate areas and sometimes as one large venue, for example for monthly company updates,” explains Lankinen. “The main challenge was to provide the flexibility for the customer to realign the layout without compromising reliability and ease-of-use. We solved this by using streamlined mobile screen stands with integrated custom loudspeaker mounts, with embedded AV-over-IP technologies for audio and video distribution combined with 8430 IP loudspeakers with their AES67 streaming capability. The customer can easily move these mobile units into the required position, and everything fires up automatically.”
Kurhela confirms that Genelec was ultimately a natural choice: “The stylish, uniform design language, audio quality, versatility and long lifecycle of the speakers were key values for us. The long lifecycle means that we’ll be able to re-use the speakers in different solutions following future renovations. As a company we are committed to finding sustainable solutions, so Genelec is a perfect fit for us from that point of view. The fact that they are an internationally renowned Finnish speaker manufacturer was also a plus.”
The final word goes to Janne Lankinen, who also appreciates Genelec products from a workflow perspective. “They are very familiar to our technical staff and thus are quick to install. Everything always works out of the box and we receive top notch support from the Genelec factory in Iisalmi. Shipments generally arrive right on time and there are no efficiency losses on site. We are able to deliver high quality, visually aesthetic, reliable solutions that last for years. It’s companies like Genelec who enable us to shine at what we do.”
Audio Lisbon had been working in 5.1 for a long time, so the ability to handle fully immersive content was a natural progression. “Being a new facility designed from scratch, it seemed logical to plan and install this format early, to avoid making changes in the future,” explains Pedro Carvalho, Partner at Audio Lisbon. “It is also a way for us to be able to offer other solutions to regular customers, as well as attracting new clients from other markets.”
Having made this decision, the next challenge was to find the right tools to enhance the studio’s workflow. “We considered several brands and systems for immersive audio monitoring,” recalls Carvalho. “We wanted auto-calibrated nearfield active monitors with an SPL that suited the room volume, and had AES/EBU connectivity so as to integrate with our Avid MTRX interface. Of course, they also had to sound good.”
It was at this point that Genelec’s local distribution partner Garrett Audiovisuais became involved in the project. “Ever since Genelec launched The Ones series of coaxial three–way monitors, we had been curious to hear what they could do,” says Carvalho. “After a visit to hear the 8351s at Garrett’s listening room, which happens to be nearby, all of our doubts were dispelled.”

Working with Marcelo Tavares from Audiodesigner for the acoustic design and Paulo Mendes for the technical design and installation, Audio Lisbon ultimately opted for an all–Genelec 7.1.4 Smart Active Monitoring solution. 8341A coaxial monitors have been installed in the LCR positions, while 8340A two-way monitors have been used for side and rear surrounds, and 8330A two-way monitors handle the ceiling channels. Two subwoofers have also been employed, to handle the LF content and provide bass management for the system. A 7370A subwoofer is coupled with the front and surround monitors, while the more compact 7360A model was chosen to partner the ceiling monitors.
Following the installation of the system, Carvalho describes the fine tuning possible with the GLM calibration software as “the icing on the cake”. “Although I had absolute confidence in Marcelo's work acoustically, it is a huge advantage to have a system that corrects minor anomalies in room acoustics, and makes it possible to store different calibration settings from 2.0 to 7.1.4 in a practical and effective way,” he reflects.

With the new post facility now fully operational, Carvalho is certainly happy with the results it has achieved and the new monitors in particular. “I'm a fan of these coaxial models. The quality and sound detail is impressive and the size/power ratio is amazing. Even though we have chosen a mixture of coaxial and conventional two–way models for our system, the balance obtained is really good. They also have a good dynamic range and good transient response. This investment represents an opportunity for expansion into other markets at both national and international level.”
Combining an ambient music performance with a multi-channel listening experience, both the performers and the live audience were surrounded by a ring array of Genelec loudspeakers, creating a truly unique listening environment. This type of playback system is tailor-made for ambient music, emphasising the sense of space and the abstract nature of the compositions – and creating an incredibly thought-provoking and stimulating live event.
The planning and creation of the show took place over a two month period, using the demonstration space in Modern Sky to evaluate how the sound elements combined, how they moved, and what type of speaker configuration would be best suited to the ambient material. The creative team included electronic musician Wang Lu, also known as L + R, music producer/mixer Shen Lijia and visual artist Tami-musiXgal, and working alongside our colleagues at Genelec China, a system comprising eight S360 high-SPL smart active monitors and a 7382 subwoofer was used to surround the audience, while a smaller smart active array of four 8330 two-ways, four 8331 coaxial three-ways and a 7360 subwoofer was used to envelop the musician and the VJ. Genelec GLM software was then used to analyse the room and optimise the frequency response, distance delay and playback level of each speaker in the system – thereby delivering the best possible listening experience to both performers and audience alike.
In planning the event, the team were seeking a good combination of manual control, programming and random machine triggering, with the pre-programmed foundation of the 8.1 audio mix being handled by Ableton Live, with Cycling 74’s Max allowing communication with external hardware instruments – and plenty of real-time musical improvisation was included too!
Prior to the event, the demand for tickets was so high that it was decided to stage three separate performances, to allow every listener to position themselves comfortably within the speaker array and experience the finest sound quality. And from our own perspective, the whole process of planning and executing the event gave us a much deeper understanding of the shaping of space, the precise positioning of sound and the design of moving trajectories in music.
There’s no doubt to us at Genelec that as the world’s exposure to immersive audio becomes greater, the future of multi-channel live music performances is increasingly looking brighter. There are a whole new generation of music fans who are seeking more and more ‘experiential’ live performances, and Genelec is excited to play its part in the growth of this exciting medium.
The Finnish Music Hall of Fame is Helsinki’s most recent and innovative cultural landmark. Located in the newly redeveloped Pasila district of the Finnish capital, already noted for its vibrant street art, the museum is attracting visitors in droves thanks to the unique concepts that have been deployed to depict the history of Finnish music.
Genelec was approached from the outset to be a part of this exciting project, the design and installation of which was awarded to renowned Nordic AV integration specialists, Bright.
“Genelec is the world leading company in professional audio monitoring,” says Music Hall of Fame board member, Olli Ilmolahti. “We knew that Genelec has been researching and developing products over many decades and already has much experience in this field.

The new music museum offers a multisensory experience for all music lovers covering genres from three centuries - from symphonies to Finnish rap music to folk and heavy rock plus everything in between - made possible by utilising the newest technologies available. The aim was to provide an interactive museum experience at a whole new level, offering visitors the chance to experience full musical immersion and a dive into the textures of music. Virtual technology enables visitors to embark on spectacular musical journeys whilst modern sound technology permits them to explore the roles that various instruments and voices play in a symphony orchestra, a mixed choir and a military band. Visitors can make their voice heard by performing on Finland’s finest stages, from the Helsinki Music Centre to Olavinlinna Castle on a virtual karaoke tour, and much more besides.
Genelec’s new Smart IP platform was an absolutely key element in making all of this a reality. Genelec worked with Bright and various content creators to establish the optimum audio design for each space and each exhibit. Bright deployed 124 of Genelec’s new 4430A two-way, active installation loudspeakers throughout the museum - the first model to incorporate Genelec’s ground-breaking Smart IP technology. The Smart IP platform enables IP networking via both Dante and AES67, and derives power via both PoE and PoE+ Power-over-Ethernet formats. As well as receiving both power and audio-over-IP, the 4430’s rear panel CAT connector also allows access to Genelec’s Smart IP Manager – a sophisticated downloadable software tool running on Windows 10 that allows installers to configure an almost unlimited number of rooms, zones, speakers and audio channels, and includes device discovery, versatile room equalisation, system organisation and status monitoring. External control via third-party hardware, software or house automation is also possible.
“We were responsible for designing a digital experience system with the possibility to change exhibitions efficiently when required,” says Bright’s Head of Installation, Santtu Sipilä, who worked closely with Genelec throughout the design and installation process. “As this was the Finnish Music Hall of Fame, some extra attention was needed regarding the sound quality. We investigated several other music museums to ensure that our solution would deliver the best sound quality of them all.
The decision to use Genelec was clearly a determining factor in achieving that goal, and the possibility of using the new networked loudspeakers made it even easier. The Smart IP technology enables us to drive each loudspeaker independently, and that opens up a wealth of opportunities for immersive sound experiences.”
In order to ensure the best possible audio experience, particular attention was paid to the acoustics of the museum during the design stage: “Even the best loudspeakers are no good if the acoustics don’t work!” says Santtu with a smile. “We also had to pay careful attention to the network to be able to run perfectly synchronised sound and video at the same time. Again, the Smart IP platform played an important part in making this work successfully.”
The Board members are thrilled with the results, and customer feedback confirms the success of the project. “The Finnish Music Hall of Fame is full of technology - virtual reality and digital technology are used to convey music, video, audio, sound effects and live music. I strongly believe that the sound world and acoustics form the most important and memorable experience at the Music Museum from the customer’s point of view,” says Olli Ilmolahti. “Genelec´s new Smart IP technology was a perfect choice for us, offering a complete solution with the highest quality and flexibility which means savings in working time, maintenance and investment costs. We achieved everything we wanted and more, and the immersive sound world and listening environment in certain areas of the Fame Music Museum - as well as the neutral, transparent sound throughout - is something to be experienced. Customer feedback has been nothing but positive.”
Mikko Vanni, chairman of the board for the museum, agrees wholeheartedly. “We wanted to use the most advanced technology available, and all the technological solutions devised by Genelec and Bright have been successful. We have been able to leverage this by informing the media and our main target groups that we have a very advanced Genelec solution (including an immersive voice system) combined with other sophisticated technology, which has given added value to the content credibility of the museum. We think that the Genelec system is amazing - the vocal reproduction throughout the venue is truly special. We set out to achieve a level above what is already out there, and we’ve done it. We’re delighted with the results.”

The Classic 8000 Series monitors have an analogue input. The 7200 Series SAM subwoofers have AES/EBU digital outputs only. However, other 7300 Series SAM subwoofers have analogue inputs and outputs and can be used also with analogue monitors.
Which SAM™ Products You Are Going to Mix With the Classic 8000 Series?
Mixing 8000 Series and SAM™ monitors is not recommended
We do not recommend mixing Classic 8000 Series monitors with SAM™ Monitors.
If the analogue input sensitivity of 8000 Series and SAM™ Series monitors are the same, Genelec SAM™ Monitors exhibit a slightly larger latency (< 5 ms) than 8000 Series monitors. Therefore Classic 8000 Series and SAM™ Series monitors should not be mixed in a stereo pair or multichannel setup.
It is alright to mix Classic 8000 Series with SAM™ Subwoofers
However, it is okay to mix the Classic 8000 Series monitors with SAM™ Subwoofers. Any Classic 8000 Series monitors can be used with SAM™ Subwoofers, in any stereo or multichannel setup.
Setting the room response calibration controls
Genelec monitors are calibrated flat in anechoic free field conditions. When the monitor is placed in a room close to walls or other boundaries, the low frequency output of the monitor increases. To achieve a flat low frequency response an adjustment of typically -4 dB on the bass tilt control is used. Genelec also provides a bass roll-off control to compensate for any remaining excessive LF energy around the low cut-off frequency.
Genelec GLM AutoCal can implement a more precise compensation after measuring the acoustic effects produced by the monitor’s installation location.
Differences in room reverberation time and listening distance can lead to changes being required in the treble region so treble tilt is fitted to most of the models in the Genelec range.
In three-way monitors and large main systems there are additional driver controls for the bass level, mid level and treble level which enable very fine adjustment of the frequency response so that the monitors can be placed in many different listening environments, whilst still achieving a consistent and neutral sound reproduction.
The best way to set the room response controls of a Genelec monitor is by taking an acoustical measurement at the listening location, using a measurement system for those products that offer local controls (DIP switches) on the monitor or subwoofer, or by using GLM AutoCal for the SAM™ (Smart Active Monitoring) products.
